A lover is chosen
beloved more than anything.
A lover is not a second dish
a lover fills you.
The lover becomes your reason of life
         your all

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

We all know our friend Venancio Arturo Rubén as Rubén. He dislikes his first name, Venancio, given to honour his grandfather and the shortform VAR is something he can’t stand, up to the point that he cuts the relation with someone calling him so more than two times. “One time is no time, two times one too much”, his favourite phrase after explaining his miff if someone uses this nickname trying to be funny. Rubén proposed a debate for the dessert: Dull life. True that he said the idea came to him driving to the dinner when hearing a radio program, but nobody believed him. We all know he is a scientist and that he prepares all arguments thoroughly.

To introduce the topic and its provocative conclusion he reminded us the old riddle: What is what makes stumble a distracted person, is used by the violent as a weapon and is a toy for the child? It couldn't be a stick neither a branch nor the jawbone of a donkey. He continued: “Drummond made poetry of it, Jesus built over it, David used it to kill Goliath and Michelangelo made artworks with it.” Now it was evident. We interrupted him shouting all in one voice The Stone!Effectively in all cases only a stone and the difference is not in the element itself but on the use we make of it and how we see it”.

Dull life, stone… we guessed what was going to be Ruben’s reasoning line; perception and personal position. He continued; glad to see we knew we followed him.

Children are normally happy even under adverse circumstances. Not older people; due to a varied number of reasons but especially due to loneliness, lack of love / friendship / affectivity. We all need somebody that provides emotional closeness; hence that an affective rupture hurts so much. How many people say that their life has no sense? Or better said, that it doesn't make sense anymore?  It is the moment in which the dull life pops out, the life that is easy and pleases but lacks of emotions, sometimes due to a security feeling but at the end noxious.

Let’s take the case of a sentimental rupture, as we could take any other one. But this one is more common. After the rupture what do we have? Bad mood and spite. After spite a strange time comes. Suspicion is usual. Anyone approaching a woman is considered a perverted flirtatious man, and if it is a woman who makes the approach it is because she is unsatisfied or wants revenge. Later comes the self-worth, “see what you have lost”, then the fun time; there is no lack of friends, lovers and time fillers. Till you get bored. Too much excitement, all the activity does not end in the searched result, even if this one is unknown. Boredom and loneliness come short after, also aboulia and the void, the emptiness. Nothing happens, nothing calms, and nothing helps. We are caught in the dark well of ourselves. Unable to break our chains we can’t even ask for help nor concentrate in what we have to do. It is the worst blackness, the one from the dumb and deaf soul. If we are not able to get out of it, if we abandon, then we deal with the enemy to be happy. This is life, dull, but secure. Every day that passes despair corrodes a bit more, without us being aware of it till it brings us to be intolerant or embittered. We do not abandon ourselves to comfort but to the no-thinking-no-taking-risk state.

It is precisely in this point of falling into the well when we have to fight to go out of it; but the self-help books are useless if we have not taken previously the decision, hence that they aren’t anything more than nice theory, but only theory. To emerge from the water when we drown we stamp, we don’t follow the theory of swimming. And nonetheless the well can be positive as it is the myrrh that being bitter has positive uses in medicine curing thousand pains.

The feeling that nothing interesting happens is mainly due to the lack of action, to the endless waiting that things happen by external or divine willingness. Reject pretenders waiting for the blue prince without having even sent a picture to the royal families is nonsense; he will never show up as he doesn't know where to go. Wait till in the flood God sends a helicopter and reject the tree floating on the water is wait that others decide for us. The fear of taking action covers the insane happiness of knowing we are in a known territory: the one of conformism.

-“To go out of the well we have to look for a lover”. Here he looked all of us with a mocking smile, waiting our reaction. The truth is that more than one thought that he was telling us that he had suffered a depression and that now he had a lover. But no, it wasn't the case:

-“Not a person, don’t be nasty-minded; a lover is what excites us, what assaults our thoughts before falling asleep and also what sometimes doesn't let us sleep. Our lover is what turns us distracted, brings us away from the scene, what we suddenly discover that is taking our brain without noticing it. In other words what makes us feel and know that life makes sense and motivates us, as the versifier wrote long time ago:

A lover is chosen
beloved more than anything.
A lover is not a second dish
a lover fills you.
The lover becomes your reason of life
         your all

- “So, we all need a pair of lovers” said Juan, Where do I have to sign for it? But if we are in the well, Rubén, how do we find the lover? Where from do we take the strength, the willingness and perseverance for it?

-“From the change of view” Juan. Black is only a name. If we really want to emerge we only need the inner disposition for it. Who doesn’t climb the well is because he doesn't want. Sounds hard, but is true. Juan, this is the topic of the debate but the way of doing it is called action.

The discussion was served… and it lasted till the restaurant was closed.
