-- No, Majestad.

Social Uniforms

The fear of not being perfect in aspect arrives to the point that even the sewings of the socks are borne inward.
K., Scattered Annotations

Normally members of the noser's club don't assist in working uniform to the meetings but it happens from time to time due to the pressure to arrive with German punctuality. Nothing happens if one is late as we switched to open meetings instead of dinners where punctuality is a must; but everybody likes to be since the beginning and not lose one word from the discussions.

The discussion was opened with an old story to show that society influences us so that we can't see beyond the end of our nose, in other words that we think so much about ourselves as good in all that we can't see what is really important.

The story (made short) was the following:

Once upon a time ... one farmer traveled with wife and 12 years old child and a donkey. Travel was long so they let the child ride the donkey and the parents walked by his side. Crossing some people they heard how they criticized that the boy was so uneducated that let the parents walk while he was comfortably riding the donkey. Parents took note and to avoid further criticism the father took his place. Short time after they crossed some people that loudly commented about the man that let the woman and boy walk all the time, so they changed again and this time father and boy were walking and the mother riding the donkey. Only one hour after, people that crossed them said that it was unfair that after having worked all day the man had still to walk instead of rest and what a poor child that the mother took his place. The family decided to ride all three, was clear that was to the eyes of society what had to be done. Again not long time after the comment people that crossed them shouted saying that poor donkey that had to carry all of them being totally exhausted. In brief, the family decided to be all 3 walking ... to hear once more how people laughed saying that how stupid they were, walking when they had a donkey to ride.

A story that reflects two important things: that we fear what others think about us and that we expect things (people) to be (behave) as we expect and react negatively if this is not the case. There is a non written rule stating that if things (people) are not as we expect there is something wrong in them and not in us. We see this every day as we also see how we prepare ourselves to be nice for the others... no imperfection to be seen.

Not only education brings us to be nice with the rest of people. This would be logic: is a rule to be able to cooperate and work as a team and get more of our effort. There is also an effort we do to follow the social norms to satisfy our ego by being accepted and if possible stand out. We go to a job interview specially dressed, to a wedding ceremony we even buy a dress, to a funeral we again follow the social code. And we pretend we are free and independent! Not only we are not and are tied, we even criticize, judge and condemn who is by his way of dressing clearly against the norm. We do not evaluate the person, we do not stop to see what the person is, we judge only from appearance. Two typical examples: job interview for a high direction post in a traditional company: Who goes with shorts? The interviewer will practically disregard the candidate in the first second and even with all positive adapting to the post ... will be rejected. Second example luxury restaurant. Would we accept a waiter in shorts and dreadlocks?

Unfortunately we live for the others, but not to help and support, to be seen and show how well we follow norms that in private we criticize and tick as stupid and obsolete. We still have to learn to judge people by what they do not by how they look, and have to listen to understand and share not to answer and justify our position.

The comments were long and unfortunately we saw that the speaker was right as most agreed defending their position without listening to the rest and wearing a nice social uniform.

DRAE

¿No tendríamos miedo?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It doesn’t seem to be well defined in Spanish the difference between automatic devices and robots.  In industry we speak about automation and when we refer to a higher degree of complexity we speak about robots, while in essence both are the same. There is a general agreement among experts and people to refer to robots when their operations include some or all of the following:  movement, operating of mechanical arms, feel and manipulate their environment and show intelligent behaviour, especially if that behaviour mimics that of humans or other animals and seems to have sense of  own purpose.

We tend to believe that given the progress of science and technology especially automata / robots appeared relatively recently.  It is not like this. It is more than 2000 years that they exist in a variety of development stages. Egyptians had gods that gave off flames from the eyes, Romans and Chinese articulated toys and even the Spartans in 200 BC had vending machines where they could buy wine for two coins.  In Greece, Italy, Egypt perfumes were sold in public machines. The Maya were masters of altars with springs, hidden doors ... all these are automatons.

In China 2000 years ago existed already some as game or entertainment for the rulers like dragons fluttering wings and spitting fire or flying and singing nightingales.  Of all the long history that includes the (wooden) flying pigeons made by Archytas in the 400 BC, the book of Heron of Alexandria who teaches how to manufacture automatons and the soldiers of Juanelo of Turrianes, the most notable perhaps are: the one that heads this post made by Pierre Jaquet Droz, Swiss, born in 1721, creator of the three most complex and famous robots of the 18th; the humanoid robot ( in iron) done by Albert von Bollstädt (Saint Alberto Magno) that opened doors, kowtowed and said a few words  --was so advanced that was beheaded by Thomas of Aquinas horrified of this diabolic creature-- and the lion built by Leonardo da Vinci in 1515 that walked through rooms and in front of the king Francis I of France opened the chest with a leg showing a Fleur de Lis.

There have always been machines that have done some work or have entertained. Technique has made possible to manufacture robots capable of taking decisions based on what they have experienced before. Robots that decide on the basis of given parameters but can alter those same parameters learning from their mistakes or optimizing actions. Do they think? If we consider the definition of thinking:

1. Create or combine ideas or judgments in mind.
2. Examine mentally something carefully to form a judgment.
3. Have the intention to do something.
4. Form in mind a judgment or opinion about something.
5. Remember or bring to mind something or someone.
6. Take into consideration something or someone when acting.

what doesn’t meet a robot programmed to do a task and to learn from mistakes?  There is no doubt that a robot has a thought, directed and perhaps limited but thought. It can be argued that to be a real thought must be free, at will and multiple. Not everyone knows everything or act at all times so it seems valid to accept the robot as a thinking being.

Would we put a robot at home?  Not the ones in the kitchen (manually operated devices).  No, humanoids programmed to perform certain actions, able to learn, multi-function, without need of rest and therefore always vigilant. Wouldn’t we be afraid? We fear the unknown, what we don’t dominate. We provoke and venture to changes and experiments without knowing the consequences. We play dangerously when we believe we can win without difficulty. Is our conscious so clean as to accept someone who seems to be all the time in a non-stop watching us? Witches do not exist, but there are. Can a robot go crazy or learn more than you expected? It is a possibility; there may be a fault in all. And if we disconnect them when they are not needed? We may lose protection as they can be our guards at night. So will be afraid of them?

We create our fears; they don’t exist out of our psyche. There is no reason to fear beyond what we want to fear. Fears are the weaknesses we feed and we do not want to or do not know how to face. There may be things that we do not control unexpected items or planning failures. But this doesn’t generate fear unless we concede them the right to play with our minds.  Fear is fought by reasoning and negative emotions are destroyed with confidence. If we ask if the cat already knows that we are not a mouse, it means we haven´t generated enough confidence in ourselves. We can create robots, but we must also create confidence in our ability to make and change our environment. Without it, the robots will be only hands without initiative.
