The thoughts' nursery

History is the story of facts, sometimes guessing why they happened but never explaining what were the thoughts that behind an action.

The last meeting of the circle of the square table counted with the presence of a known writer as speaker. We asked her about how ideas came to her mind and how she develops them. She told about her method: "The moment an idea takes the form or a thought seems to be defined, I write it down. I have always a small notebook with me that I call the thoughts’ nursery and when I have time or am in the mood for it, I develop the telegraphic idea I noted."

She was kind and agreed to give a glimpse on the last annotations. They were the following: 

Words 

To be poor of words is to be poor in thoughts. With words we think, we perceive, we name; with the words we remember, we distinguish, we relate; with the words we have fun. To lose words is to lose the things they designate, so that when our language becomes impoverished, what is impoverished is the reality itself and the understanding we have of it. Whoever has more words perceives more of reality and is also able to give a better account of it. Example: two people standing in front of a large number and diversity of trees, one of them exclaims "What a beautiful forest!", While the other says "What beautiful Eucalyptus, Boldos, Oaks, Peumos and Soapbark trees!". Who enjoys more the diversity?

Embrace what you get

Events happen and people behave as they are. Embrace what you actually get. It is not things that disturb us, but our interpretation of their significance. … Remember to discriminate between events themselves and your interpretations of them. Try to stop and think before any answer, verbal or emotional. Don’t let emotions take over unless you really want to hurt. 

Discussions

Take care not to discuss matters that are of great importance to you with people who are not important to you. As most people only know how to respond to an idea by pouncing on its shortfalls rather than identifying its potential merits. Many people believe that to discuss long shows wisdom and smartness and this regardless what they say. People important to you are already selected people and they will help in the discussion, not just say words to fill the air. 

Thinking
If someone were to sell you or give for free to anyone without asking and having any right to it, you would naturally react and be furious. Your mind is more than your body so react and be furious if someone wants to influence you. Don’t let your mind to be raped with demagogic reasoning.

Attention

When we blather about trivial things, we ourselves become trivial, for our attention gets taken up with trivialities. You become what you give attention to. The wise do not confuse data or information, however prodigious or cleverly deployed, with comprehensive knowledge or transcendent wisdom. 

Conventional thinking
Popular perceptions, values, and ways of doing things are rarely the wisest. Many pervasive beliefs would surely not pass appropriate tests of rationality. Conventional thinking — its means and ends — is essentially uncreative and uninteresting. Its job is to preserve the status quo for overly self-defended individuals and institutions. But what is worse, to have all people uniformed or all people being only individualists? Society needs conventional thinking to be in peace and progress.

Freedom

We are ultimately controlled by that which bestows what we seek or removes what we don’t want. If it’s freedom you seek, then wish nothing and shun nothing that depends on others, or you will always be a helpless slave. … Most people tend to delude themselves into thinking that freedom comes from doing what makes feel good or what fosters comfort and ease. The truth is that people who subordinate reason to their feelings of the moment are actually slaves of their desires and aversions. Be also aware that freedom has a counterpart called security; more of one implies less of the other. Freedom and love are also sometimes in contradiction, but both move the souls to progress.

Héroes anónimos

Hacen de su vida un acto de entrega a aquellos que mas lo necesitan, a veces incluso corriendo riesgos.

Creamos a los héroes para parecernos a los dioses y pretender que el destino se puede torcer; pero olvidamos que ser héroe implica un fin generalmente violento.

Tenemos el sentido del heroísmo no precisamente para practicarlo, sino para aplaudirlo.

Durante el paseo S.M. me preguntó sobre la conveniencia de instituir un premio que incitara al pueblo al progreso. Dudaba entre un premio a algún tipo de ciencia o algo más cercano y que realzara la convivencia, como un premio "al héroe anónimo". Me animó a decirle abiertamente lo que pienso. ¿Qué otra posibilidad me quedaba que complacer a S.M., y decirle lo que pienso y no lo que realmente deseaba oír? 

-- Tenemos un problema, Majestad, los verdaderos héroes, no salen en las páginas de los periódicos, ni en redes sociales, ni en TV. No lo son quienes son alabados por gestos extremos en su profesión. Vos no lo sois por mantener la paz en el reino, ni lo es el conductor que evita un accidente con una maniobra arriesgada. Los héroes anónimos de verdad son las personas que en un acto privado, íntimo y sin publicidad se sacrifican por los demás, comparten aquello que no tienen suficiente o todo lo que tienen sin pedir nada a cambio y sin que les llene su ego; son los que están luchando dentro de Siria, son los que ayudan en Myanmar a los rohingyas, son los dan de comer a los necesitados. Son esos enfermeros que no interrumpen su trabajo pese a haber acabado su jornada laboral, esos voluntarios que creen en una causa humanitaria y que realizan sus actos en cualquier sitio. No hace falta trabajar en una ONG, basta consolar a quien a perdido la fe en la vida, ayudar a quien duda y necesita una oreja, a quien precisa la mano que le une al mundo. Ésos héroes, Majestad, son los anónimos de verdad. Carecen de nombre especial pero mantienen la ilusión en una sociedad humana y solidaria. Son los que en su lucha por la justicia y la igualdad mojan de ilusión y esperanza las almas y esos héroes, muchas veces ni siquiera son conscientes de que lo son. 

No les encontraremos Majestad. El pueblo señalará al bombero que salva al niño del incendio con riesgo de perder la vida. Un acto noble, si, pero dentro de lo que se espera de él. Esperamos que el capitán abandone el último el barco y si no lo hace es un cobarde. No hay que elevar a héroe a quien simplemente cumple con su profesión y cometido, aunque lo haga muy bien. Realizan hazañas y nos acercan a los dioses, quienesquiera que sean éstos. Como los héroes clásicos poseen una gran inteligencia, aunque quizá sea más emocional, y más social que de IQ. Cuando mueren han dejado un legado, diseminado entre las gentes y entran pronto en el panteón del olvido. Ni muertos desean la gloria.

Son gente con coraje y gran fuerza interior, inconformistas y a la vez idealistas; la mayor parte de las veces con vidas complicadas que les han hecho evolucionar y ser diferentes a los demás; han sorteado las pruebas de la vida, pero a diferencia de los héroes mitológicos nacieron normalmente y no hubo intervención de dioses ni seres sobrenaturales en su gestación. Sin embargo algo les une a lo héroes de los cantares: se rigen por valores universales. No tienen miedo a la muerte en realidad, creen en la pervivencia del espíritu humano. Y un último apunte, Majestad, el mal es ruidoso, el bien suele ser invisible y siempre silencioso, recordad al refranero: Ni el bien hace ruido, ni el ruido hace el bien.

-- ¿Entonces un premio científico?

No, Majestad, tampoco. Eso beneficiaría solo a algunos, pocos y muy determinados. Si es por lo hecho es inútil como acicate, si es por lo que se pretende hacer es un riesgo si el proyecto fracasa. En cualquier caso premiaríais a la élite, no al pueblo.

-- ¿Qué me recomienda el albardán?, me preguntó sonriendo con cierta ironía

-- El descarado de vuestro servidor os recomienda que invirtáis en beneficio del pueblo, Majestad. De todo el pueblo. Invertid en promocionar los valores sin anclarlos al pasado; invertid en educación con visión de futuro; invertid en premiar el pensamiento. Con ello alentaréis a los héroes anónimos, les daréis fuerzas y vuestro pueblo progresará. No irá directo a la felicidad, pero si estará en el camino correcto. Invertid en valores y educación, Majestad.

Acabó el paseo y algo le debió quedar a S.M. porque hizo llamar al ministro de educación. Ojalá no le pregunte y solo disponga, los especialistas son los peores consejeros pues se ahogan en sus consideraciones.
